Because it is not original R1 from cold steel, only some freaky imitation. Original R1 is made in japan, VG-1 SanMai III steel.
Costs 300 dollars.

I believe it is legitimate. I think th very early R1's may have been made in Taiwan. Until recently they were AUS-8 until the switch to SAN-MAI IIII.

Actually, the early R-1s were made in japan, and were indeed Aus 8. They moved production to Taiwan and changed the steel to San Mai. They probably did the San Mai in Japan at first as well, but I don't know. This is what happens when cost considerations make a different country of origin more appeasing to the pocket book. Still nice knives though.
