Here is an interesting link. http://www.emersonknives.com/MyViewThousand.html
Not sure if it will work. You may have to paste it into your browser. In the past I have been able to find the actual article. It's in German but had lots of good destructo pics.
One thing I like about Emerson is he seems a pretty straight up kind of guy. Not many manufacturers would put an article on their website where a knife actually does better than theirs. The only knives that didn't break were the Emerson, CRKT and Buck.
My point is many people seem to dismiss CRKT knives and AUS8 steel. I have a Kershaw 5 inch hunting knife which I bought in the early 80s. That knife is in AUS8 which at the time was relatively unheard of or used outside Japan. That knife has seem some use especially as a young guy. I'd chuck, chop stab, dig and do all kinds of stuff that the manufacturer says not to do. It's scratched but still looks and works great. The CRKT M16-14LE I have has taken some serious abuse at home and work. More than a folder should. I find the tanto tip upside down works great scaping BBQ grills. The old style blue teflon finish is pretty much intact. Rubbed off in a few spots and scuffed in others. The aluminium scales have a few nicks but look pretty much like new. The blade doesn't wobble. Sharpens easy. It's had a dent or two on the edge but never a chip. It's been sharpened so many times over the years the serrated portion seems to be the wider portion of the blade. I own a few folders. Many far more expensive and exotic. But this one is still my sentimental favourite and I know it works.

That was a good read. But he broke all the pretty knives. What a monster I'm looking forward to testing AUS8 steel.

I reckon AUS8 is a bit under rated. Probably stemming from a lot of opinions on other forums from folks who just like to attack something without ever trying it and spreading stories they have 'heard'. Me thinks the Japanese have been doing amazing stuff with metal for a long time. Roy Weatherby even turned there for manufacture because he couldn't find a local steel manufacturer to meet his atandards. Of course that has now changed and Weatherby's are being made locally again. Here is pic of my old hunting and I'll stick it in anything buddy

The one above it is a Kershaw as well. It is a solid piece of AUS8 with Stag handles. Kershaw make neither any more. The closest to the fixed blade is the 'Deerhunter'. The blade is shorter on that model. The closest dagger model made today as then is the 'Trooper' which has a phenolic handle, not stag. The pics were taken in 2005 for a local forum which is now closed. GEEEZ seems age is catching up with me....Knives I like ain't made. Forums I like have ended...what's next? |

| I have heard that AUS 8 performs like 440B or C. If that is true, then it would be pretty good as seen by the S&W knife test. The steel held up very well, the tang was its weakness. I'm not sure though, just going off what I have heard, I don't have any experience with AUS 8. |

440c is not bad at all. I just got finished testing a Red Scorpion 6 WSK in 440C it was brittle on the edge but it took some good hammer blows on the spine and on the saw portion without breaking. The edge was hollow ground also so this didn't help the edge hold up.
Nice looking knives Tac
