I own a mini gransfors axe : it is an excellent tool with a great cutting ability, easy to sharpen and fairly light for an axe. Moreover, it is always a great pleasure to have a handmade tool.
Great test !!!

wow, I was suprised how much it got outchopped!
this really mens to me that only larger axes are really actually useful compared to a knife, I mean would to want that as your only blade in the feild?
or would you rather have a good big chopper that versatile like the fbm?
great test noss!
I can't wait for the feild test.

I was surprised also about the chopping time difference. I would have put my money on the hatchet. I would have lost.
The FBM is a beast. I will always prefer a large knife over a hatchet. They are just far more versatile then a hatchet alone.

I rather use a large blade than an axe too : a big knife is more versatile. However, it requires less efforts to work with an axe than with a big knife. When you have to cut and to split a lot of woods, it is better to have an axe.
But I bought this axe mainly because it is a beautiful object.

Knife Hunter also sent me the GB Hunters axe. I'm going to take it in the field and put it up against the FBM. I'll be doing more long term chopping. So I'll be able to get some comparison between the two. I never carry an axe myself.

I think the bigger axe will def. outchop the fbm, I can chop forever with my DFLE and not have much comfort problems or get tired.(its just so light)
well after a couple days of chopping you do get some blisters, but not that bad.
I do Love axes though, big heavy ones, just for the fun of it.
:D
and its such a great workout.

The hunters axe is heavy compared to the wildlife. It also has a 19" handle so you can use both hands if you want.

Very nice!

Hey noss, could you test a 14" Fiskar's hatchet for your next axe test? I think it'd be the ideal comparison to the gransfors.

Sketchbag: Welcome to the forum. I may test a Gerber axe here soon. I have one and I would love to see if it can hold up to the same punishment and the GB.
