i've always been a bit wary of pricing that seems too good to be true, and i have to say that i'm not a real big fan of cold steel's newer products. but i've been in the market for a smaller fixed blade for a while now, and i've heard generally good things about the roach belly, so i decided to pick one up. the cold steel website lists them as $16.99 plus tax, shipping, etc... but i got mine through ebay for about the same amount including shipping, so i figured that even if the knife turned out to be total crap i wouldn't be out that much.
for the most part, i am very impressed with the roach belly. as can usually be expected with cold steel, it was very sharp right out of the box. the blade length is 4.5 inches, and the overall length is 8.5, so it's a bit on the small side. i'm not very familiar with the 4116 krupp stainless steel, but the edge held extremely well while i was trying the knife out.
cutting through cardboard and batoning were very easy, although the shorter length of the blade makes batoning somewhat difficult for larger pieces of wood. the short length also mostly rules out its use as a chopper. the tip is very sturdy, and combined with how light the knife is, it makes doing fine work very easy.
overall, i am pretty pleased with the knife. i wouldn't carry it as my main tool in the outdoors, but as a backup knife and for doing finer work, it's fantastic.
i suggest you also check out this review (it's actually the one that convinced me to purchase it) --> http://survival.com/IVB/lofiversion/index.php?t17573.html
it's much more in-depth, and there's some nice photos of the knife in action.

Nice knife..Great review. Thanks..Looks like a fantastic deal for 17 bucks. I'm going to get one. The handle looks very comfortable also. I like the design. It looks like it would make a great small camp knife I could carry with my new Busse FBM.
I have seen some mixed comments about 4116 krupps stainless steel. But most of the people that own it and reviewed it have said it's a good performing steel.
It looks like a deal I can't pass up.
Thanks for review.
What blade do you carry as your main outdoor knife

| the kabar heavy bowie. i go to school in the city, so it's been somewhat neglected since summer. summer is really the only chance i have to get away from the city and enjoy the outdoors. i like to take two or three weeks out of every summer to go camping and basically live out of my car. |

familyphotoshoot: The K-bar Heavy Bowie is a nice knife. It's a great value for 50 bucks. I love the handle on it. One of best handles I have ever used on a large chopper.

Recommanded it to a friendly household as a kitchenknife, they love it.

It's a nice little blade. It is very easy to get razor sharp edge and it's a good cutter. They are a fantastic value for 11 bucks.

I scored one of these off Ebay locally the other week. 12 bucks plus 10 postage. That works out about 20 bucks US. Pretty cheap for here. What a great little knife. I've been using it as my dinner knife as well as my wife using it in the kitchen. She prefers large chefs knives but has found it quite useful. Since it has obviously been tested by others. I can add to the tests by saying it is impervious to the dish washer at this stage. It has gone through one or two cycles daily at a temperature of 65 degrees C which is 149F. The detergent used has been 'Finish Power Ball 5 in 1' with 'Finish Rinse Aid'. As a result there have been no marks to the handle or blade and even the stamped writing on the blade is intact.
The steel used Krupps 4116 is the European standard 1.4116. The same steel that Puma use(d?) in their knives (Puma Steel) as well as Gerber in some of theirs. It's a low carbon high chrome steel used in surgical tools and general cutlery. |
