I took my Ranger RD7 and stripped and blued the blade. I did some light chopping to show how well the bluing will hold up, and then retouched the blade. 1/4" 5160 steel w/ linen micarta handles. Tough as hell.

The first picture is w/ my Glock 26 and Colt 1911 .45. I used "superblue" on the blade - just some cheap cold bluing chemicals. My bluing job was pretty uneven - hard to see in the pix - you will notice that there are some really light spots in the after shots - most of that is from the uneven blue job. The pic w/ the blade all oiled up showing the light spots is a before pic that I'll add for comparison.

Looks just like new huh?

Awesome man. How did you strip the original finish off ? The knife looks tough. I will defiantly test one after seeing your photos.

OK - I got the blade new - and touched up the edge a little. The coating started to chip a little bit right along the edge, so I started chipping at it w/ my fingernail - since it was coming off somewhat easier than I'd expected, I decided to just strip it. I used a stainless steel kitchen scrub pad to take the finish off. The fact that the crinkle coat finish didn't stay on too well didn't really bother me - Ranger knives are all about strength, and less about fit and finish, and aesthetics (unless you go for a custom). The scrub pad did a pretty good job taking off the finish. From that point, I used a degreasing spray, got the blade good and dry, and then applied the bluing agent. I found that if I applied the bluing, and then sprayed oil over top of it, that it gave it more of a "blue" color, instead of a grey (like in the 3rd picture). After the oil, I just rinsed under water and dried. Again, I think that Ranger knives are great, and Justin's customer service is outstanding. I just ordered an RD4 (same as the above knife, but 4") in satin finish, w/ blue handles and black spacers - a custom order - and Jason had it shipped out today! Granted, the RD4 is a standard model, but Justin did the satin finish and custom grips, as well as ship, the day after I ordered it. I suggest the satin finish (not for you so much, cuz you're gonna do a destruction test!) for an extra $20 - it looks better, and all powder coats will eventually wear off. So, thats my experience with Ranger knives - I've had great luck w/ Justin and his customer service and support. I hope that this doesn't count as "advertisement," because I'd say the same thing about RAT (I know that you and Mike have butted heads, but he's been good to me) and Dan at Scrapyard. Looking forward to seeing more tests - and I'm glad to see the forum added to your website - good stuff.

The bluing looks good. It should be easier to keep the blade clean.

I have no bad blood with Ontario, things happen. I'm not holding a grudge with Mike. I like the RTAK II. I will buy another.

They pay us better now! I'm in the National Guard now, but when I was Active Army I was making pretty good $$!

I too had a Kabar (well, a Camillus USMC) when I first got my stripes - I got the Ranger after I got out. It'll go w/ me on any deployments w/ the Guard though!

Too easy - just make sure the blade is oil free, apply the "superblue" to the blade w/ a cotton ball, wait a minute or so (until its as dark as you want it), and then rinse it off under some water and then oil the blade - at least thats all I did. I applied the bluing a couple of times. Total cost of like $5.

BUT - I've seen great results and heard nothing but good things about "Tool Black," but I haven't used it. You should check that out as well.

Yes it's digital camouflage. I think it is the same just a different section and lighting.

All of the pix are of the same ACU top.

I haven't had any corrosion issues w/ the blued RD7. I have an RD9 that is satin finish that has had a rust spot appear on it here and there. I wipe down all of my knives w/ Sentry Solutions "Tuf Cloth" though, which is great stuff.
