I've noticed many cheaper survival knives have hollowed handles to hold matches and other things. But looking at the Fallkniven A1 for example, it doesn't seem to have that hollowed handle. I'd like to carry artificial flint or firesteel (usually 4" or so) in my survival knife. Fire is always a good thing to have. Are there high quality knives with this feature?
phokur: Welcome to the forum. The best hollow handle model on the market currently is probably the Chris Reeve The Jereboam Mk II and Mk VI. They are fully made from a single piece of steel. http://www.chrisreeve.com/jereboam.htm They are not cheap $255.00 to 415.00 but they are high quality and from a very respected Maker.
There is not much room in the handles on most of these knives. You may want to check first if you can fit a flint or other device in the handle before you buy one.
I carry a magnesium fire Starter in the pouch on my sheath.
Lot's of hollow handle knives (especially cheap ones) have such a short tang so that it can occur that the tang breaks out of the handle.
You can attach a bag on your sheath like Noss do. The space you safe with a hollow handle is small. Take a freezer bag if parts of your equipment have to stay dry.
I think I'm pretty sold on the Chris Reeve MK VI. The knife is one piece so I won't have to worry about a short tang, although impressive insight survivinox! Any chance of a future test of the MKVI Noss?
he said it didnt have good edge retention and the the blade chipped on wood I wonder if thats from the stress they put the steel under to forge it out of one piece
Very interesting review. I ordered a cheap GI Tanto and will get a airforce survival to get me by for now, but in the future (when I have money) I may come back to Chris Reeve's products. Thanks again for the replies!
