Buck Intrepid tanto
Happy new year everyone....
I've just ordered an intrepid, because of a substancial discount and the looks of the knife.
Now I wonder if it's any good and what kind of steel it's made from. My model is the one with sheath of nylon with inlay.
Please feel free to sheare experiences and opinions.....

Congratulation's on your new knife.
I have one I'm not to impressed with it. The tip does not penetrate very well because of the grind. I'm not fond of chisel edge grinds either. It does look cool. The serrations are okay on it. They cut smooth. The edge takes damage very easy doing semi heavy work like cutting wire and stuff compared to other blades I have.
I use it out in the shop now for tasks like scarping on such. So I do get some use out of it. It does not look nice anymore. It's just a knock around knife for me now.

good ting it comes to me very cheap then.... do you tink it's even worse than the Nighthawk, which I've already broken one of, going on my second....darn thing....the only blade that has held up til now is my old strider mt ats 34....and I was kind of looking for a cheaper equal to the MT.

Hey Noss....here it goes: As a soldier it's imperative that we keep the weight of our gear to an absolute minimum. That's why I went with the Nighthawk in the first place as early as in 1998. I broke it the very first time I batoned a couple of young trees to make an make shift stretcher for a soldier who broke his leg from a fall from about 5 meters. This time a Norwegian "Same-kniv" translated into Scandinavian Inuitt-knife salvaged the situation. The handle of the Nighthawk just cracked open along half of its length. Pretty anoyed, I bought the Seal 2000, same ting happened to that freaking pice of s**t, just as I pryed open a door on an improviced exercise. One of my fellow knifedeciples swore that the CS recon tanto was a sure bet. The tanto is stowed away in my garage bent about 30 deg. I searced the web for two months and had to choose between the Battle misstress and the Strider MT. I went with the MT because it was about half the price of the Busse. The MT still performs after batoning a tousand times, prying open ammo-crates, digging, prying open light doors and windows. My favourite use of the MT is when tree-climbing is crucial in order to get overall view and bearing, then I just make a couple of horizontal power-chopps to the tallest pine tree I see and ramm the tip in as deep as possible. The blade is then supported by the big tree notch I've chopped. Then I or someone else can go monkey in the Pine or some other sort of botanical wonder and hopefully get the upper hand. I missed my Nightbird so much, I bought another from nostalgy. My MT is bent about 15 deg to the right, and I fear it will give in from fattigue. I hope the Intrepids tantopoint and total envelope will survive until some knife about 0.5 inch is introduced, or ordered by me.

Here is my suggestion.
First, I would send the strider back to be replaced. Your right that it will probably give out, ats-34 isn't an very tough steel to begin with, and now that it is compromised, the end is near. Strider has an unconditional warranty, and great customer service. they will likely replace your knife with a new one in cpm-S30V, which is a definate improvement. And don't feel like your taking advantage of them, striders cost about $15 to make, so they could replace it 10 times and still make a killer profit.
All errors in spelling and grammer are entirely by design in order to enrage those who have nothing left to add to the discussion and therefore seek superiority through personal attacks.

Rune Pedersen: I would contact Strider first and see what they say like slipfirep40 suggested. I don't think the Intrepid is going to hold up long based on what you said. How much do you want to spend

I have realized that Busses and Rangers are the tools you favour, but I'm thinking I'm going to order some custom Norwegian damascus knife 0.4" thick. Prices in Norway is about twice that in the US, due to three separate taxes: import-tax, leizure(luxury) tax and taxes to the government. The fact remains that it's equally expensive to have a knife custom made as ordering a battle misstress which cost 1300 $ in Norway (this is the correct price 1300 $) back in 2002 when I first discovered them. My Strider MT cost about 700 $ in Norway in 2002 when I bought it.
Since the Intrepid is discontinued, I'm going to be nice to it.
In some distant future I will spend about 1000 $ on a Norwegian dmascus knife.
About warranty claims with Strider, I will waith until the MT breaks, shipping charges from Norway to the US and back are usually about 140 $ for one single item/knife.

All those taxes suck. That is some serious price inflation. I think a Scrapyard would fit the bill. They are hard to get though. But they are just about unbreakable as you can get. So far this has been the very best performer in the destruction tests. It just did not want to die no matter what I did to it.

damascus for what? its about as tough as s30v, probably not that much lateral strength. I think if a flex test was done with the strider it wouldv'e snapped like a twig.
rangers are tough as anything, mine has one very very small nick and my DFLE has a few more. I pryed as hard as I could with all my weight on the rd9 and nothing happened, not even any flexing. very solid knife, easy to get and inexpensive. taxes would cost more than the knife, get an rd6 or 7 and you won't regret it, you might w ant to wait until noss's test though. |

The ranger looks very solid. I'll see how it does. They are easy to obtain and this is a good thing.

I'll look into Rangers in the future, due to your confidence in them and low retail.
By the way...the bargain retail for the Intrepid is about 220 $.
I checked out Crusader Forge...and their phantom finish is cruel in an impressive way.

I believe Rangers are as tough as they come....however I have feelings about the looks of my blade....so my next purchase will probably be the Oberland 1 in phantom or titanium finnish.
